ATAS wins arbitration round
March 26, 2008 An arbitration panel favored the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in its latest ruling involving the academy's tiff with its New York-based counterpart over the creation of a Spanish-language Emmy ceremony. The National Academy of Arts & Sciences had wanted telenovelas to be eligible for consideration since they are such a big part of the Spanish-language networks' schedules, but Los Angeles-based ATAS had argued that most of those are produced outside of the U.S. and fall under the jurisdiction of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. In addition, ATAS has been named as the prevailing party in the entire arbitration, which means it can seek reimbursement for its legal expenses.
